Jan Santana's Zurich ready for the Trofeo de la Reina
Tuesday, 10 July 2007: Jan Santana's Zurich is ready for the Trofeo de la Reina, starting in Valencia in less than 2 days. In order to face the tough competition, the Spanish GP42 boat will count on some of the best Spanish sailors.
No less than 4 America's Cup crew members will be aboard the GP42 yacht, battling for the trophy off Valencia's coast. They are Jordi Calafat (Alinghi), Pepe Ribes (Victory Challenge), Manu Weiller (United Internet Team Germany) and Nuno Barreto (Desafío Español).
From July 12 to 14, the GP42 fleet will make its grand racing premiere and will undoubtedly grab the headlines at the Trofeo de la Reina - Rolex Cup. A total of 10 boats will be present at the starting line and racing promises to be of unrivaled level, given the number of top professional sailors that will come after spending 4 years in nearby Port America's Cup.
Zurich, on of Spain's top sailing teams will rely on a crew consisting of Jordi Calafat (helmsman), Pepe Ribes (bowman), Nuno Barreto (genoa trimmer), Manu Weiller (tactician), Jan Santana (navigator), Pedro Feliu (mastman), Nacho Alemany (afterguard), Per Andersen (mainsail trimmer), Juan Galmes (spinnaker trimmer), Rubén Castells (afterguard) and Jovi Campos.
Unlike most of its Spanish rivals, Zurich will be in Valencia after an intensive pre-season that gave its crew the opportunity to get to learn the new boat and adapt their crew work to this new class of boats. Every minute of sailing is welcome since the boat helmed by Jordi Calafat will have to face opponents such as Fermax of Daniel Maestre, Movistar of Pedro Campos, Quebramar of Laureano Wizner, Canarias-Puerto Calero of José Maria Ponce and Total Boats of Oscar Ibáñez, let alone the Croatian AA-HPB and the Italians Roma and Sea Wonder 007.
The hour of truth will come on Thursday the 12th at 2:30pm. On Wednesday the team will spend the day training for the last time in the Valencia race course.
