Quebramar-Chrysler wins Trofeo de la Reina with two more victories on final day

Friday, 13 July 2007: Six victories and a second place in seven races were the incredible results of Quebramar-Chrysler in the Trofeo de la Reina. The Spanish team kept their dominating pace, unabated for the third consecutive day and scored yet another two victories on the final day.

Still, the event lacked no interest and second overall position was highly contested among three teams and was decided in the last race. Zurich finished second, a mere point ahead of Seawonder 007.

The first race of the day (sixth of event) started again with nearly a delay of nearly two hours due to light winds. When the gun was fired the wind was blowing at 9 knots and similarly to the other days there was no major wind shifts. It was rather a question of sailing in clear air and taking advantage of pressure throughout the race course. Quebramar-Chrysler lead from the start but the race's excitement came in the last leg, where the "smaller" Canarias Puerto Calero and Fermax finished second and third respectively.

In the second race, the sea breeze had built to 11-12 knots with points up to 14 knots. Quebramar-Chrysler was mathematically the winner of the Trofeo de la Reina but the thriller was to be the second place whre three teams (Zurich, Seawonder 007 and Roma) were tied with 24 points. Quebramar-Chrysler was again the leader from the start with Zurich and Seawonder 007 closely behind. Although Zurich was trying hard, they were unable to threaten the leaders. At the end of the race, Seawonder 007 filed a protest against the rest for the fleet for what it claimed was their spinnakers that did not follow the GP42 rules. The protest was rejected by the jury (read the official press release on that issue).

Laureano Wizner, helmsman of Quebramar-Chrysler: "The level of the racing we maintained in the past two years and a half during the America's Cup makes a real difference from teams that are used to racing only at weekends. The performance of the fleet is quite similar upwind but downwind we were more comfortable and that seemed to make the difference.

The GP42's are quite sensitive boats. The crew has to be constantly alert and concentrate all the race long. It is very different to racing under IMS."
