International GP42 Association official press release - Congratulations to Quebramar, clarification for Seawonder 007

Saturday, 14 July 2007: Today, the second International GP42 Racing Circuit event closed its doors. Eight boats and an unforgettable event, organized by the Real Club Nautico Valencia are the key points of this spectacular week.

You can read the complete report on the website (www.gp42.net) but this press release is dedicated to explain the final thrilling situation.

Seawonder 007, a boat designed by Reichel & Puigh and owned by Vittorio Urbinati, after informing Paolo Massarini, General Manager of the Class, presented a formal protest after the arrival of the last race against all participating GP42s. They affirmed that all yachts had a Spinnaker luff length exceeding the limit mentioned in a "not well describing rule".

The fact is, with no doubt, deriving from the uncertain description made in the GP42 rule about the ASL measure, summed to a telephone request of Dede De Luca, “Onesails” sailmaker.

The jury dismissed the protest because they found anyway all boats complying with that “foggy” part of the rule and the result of the event did not change with Seawonder at the third place.

On the other hand, the problem persists because it is again a fact that Seawonder 007 has been racing, at least this event, with asymmetrical spinnakers smaller than the others.

The Class Management excuses are of course directed to the sailmaker and to the owner of the boat.

It has been decided that the Steering Committee of the Class Association will consider to "refund" the team of Seawonder with the amount of points they will judge adequate.

The rule will be clarified and some wrong references to other rules or numbers will be deleted.

Due to the extremely high level of competition, it is even clearer that the class requires an extra professional team of measurers fully dedicated.

It is also clear and it is going to be further considered as mandatory that NO verbal consultations will be tolerated. For any request of interpretation, a written document is requested.
