Zurich wins the Desafío AUDI
Sunday, 16 September 2007: Zurich scored another victory in the Spanish GP42 racing circuit, after today’s win at the 7th Desafío AUDI that took place in Sanxenxo. The event saw 5 yachts of the Spanish GP42 fleet race in light wind on Friday and Saturday while the lack of it kept the crews grounded on the closing day.
Jan Santana's boat, with Jordi Calafat on the helm and Pepe Ribes at the bow, won only one of the event's four races but finished on the top of the leaderboard due to its consistency, always crossing the line among the top two. Canarias Puerto Calero scored two victories in the four races but was unable to claim the overall leadership after finishing last in the event's last race. Third place overall went to Quum Marketing.
Zurich wins the Trofeo Príncipe de Asturias
Sunday, 9 September 2007: Zurich was declared winner of the 22nd 22 Trofeo Príncipe de Asturias-Trofeo Corporacion Caixa Galicia that ended today on the waters off Bayona, after Jan Santana’s boat, helmed by Jordi Calafat and José Maria Torcida, scored a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the last three races.
The regatta was closely fought and leadership was decided in the last day. Quebramar-Chrysler lead during the first two days, closely followed by Canarias Puerto Calero but these two teams had less than perfect performance in the closing day, giving Zurich the opportunity to win the event and Quum Marketing to grab the 3rd place after two victories and a second.
QUEBRAMAR-CHRYSLER WINS 2007 GP42 INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT
Saturday, 1 September 2007: Despite missing the first of the four events that constituted the 2007 GP42 International Circuit, Quebramar-Chrysler, the Portuguese boat owned by Gonçalo Esteves and entirely crewed by members of Desafío Español, encountered no diffficulty in being crowned champion of the up and coming GP42 class. Quebramar-Chrysler dominated the Trofeo de la Reina in Valencia and Copa del Rey in Palma and finished second in the Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler that came to an end today in Cascais.
The International GP42 Association congratulates Gonçalo Esteves and his crew and looks forward to an even closer and more exciting GP42 International Circuit in 2008.
Roma wins 2007 Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler
Saturday, 1 September 2007: Roma, the Italian GP42 boat owned by Filippo Faruffini and helmed by French America's Cup sailor Sébastien Col, won this year's edition of Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler, held in Cascais, Portugal. Despite being the fleet's oldest boat, Roma clearly showed it was on par with the other yachts, both in the first day's strong conditions as well as the second day's lighter and trickier breeze. No racing took place on Saturday due to the complete lack of winds.
As Filippo Faruffini, owner of Roma and president of the GP42 class, stated, "in the GP42 class you don't need to have the newest boat to be the champion. It’s a proof the boats have a long life and this is something we were aiming at."
Lack of wind cancels racing on final day of Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler; Roma wins event, Quebramar-Chrsyler is champion of the 2007 GP42 circuit
Saturday, 1 September 2007: The strong winds Cascais is famous for did not appear on Saturday, third and closing day of the Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler, held in the Portuguese city. During more than 4 hours the race committee searched for the slightest indication of breeze at no avail. Even at 3 miles west of Cabo da Roca (continental Europe's westernmost point) the breeze never went over 2 knots. As a result, the trophy came to an end at 3pm local time.
Roma, the fleet's first and oldest boat, won the event while Quebramar-Chrysler is now champion of the 2007 International GP42 Racing Circuit. The prize-giving ceremony will take place in the evening.
Roma extends leadership in second day of Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler in tricky conditions
Friday, 31 August 2007: Roma, the Italian GP42 boats helmed by French America's Cup sailor Sébastien Col, continued their strong performance and extended their leadership at the Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler. Conditions during the second day of the event were completely different from the opening day and the extremely shifty and variable winds put tacticians under pressure, especially in the second and third races.
Unfortunately, the initial weather forecast proved wrong and instead of the constant breeze at around 20 knots, the bay of Cascais was dominated by unstable and patchy winds varying from 11 down to 3 knots and constantly shifting, sometimes by 25 degrees.
After 6 races, Roma is leading the event with 13 points followed by Portuguese Quebramar-Chrysler and Spanish Canarias Puerto Calero. Concerning the overall 2007 circuit, Quebramar-Chrysler extended their lead and now have 73 points. Seawonder 007 is always second with 98 points while Roma further secured third position with 110 points, 12 less than Zurich. Unless a major mishap takes place on Saturday, the Italians will have their two boats on the podium for the 2007 season.
Second day of Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler promises more excitement
Friday, 31 August 2007: After an extraordinary opening day, the Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler continues on Friday and promises to offer more excitement. Firstly, the weather forecast calls for even stronger winds than yesterday. The northwestern breeze should blow over the Cascais bay in a range between 18 and 22 knots.
Secondly, the race for a podium spot is getting tougher, particularly for third position, and all eyes will be on the two Italian teams.
Sébastien Col, helmsman of Roma: Yesterday's strong winds offered us a very interesting day and I'm sure all teams were surprised by the intensity of the breeze. We sailed well, better than the rest of the fleet and this is my we won. We have also optimized the boat and we are very satisfied with our downwind speed.
Italians dominate opening day of Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler under exciting wind conditions
Thursday, 30 August 2007: One couldn't have asked for better wind conditions on the opening day of the Trofeu Quebramar-Chrysler. After a short-lived postponement ashore, the eight-strong GP42 fleet hit the waters in Cascais in an aggressive race mode fueled by the northwestern breeze that stayed between 15 and 20 knots for the best part of the day, with peaks reaching 23 knots.
Undoubtedly, the biggest story of the day was the excellent performance of the two Italian boats, Roma and Seawonder 007, that sailed clearly better than the rest of the fleet, with the only exception being the spinnaker mishap Seawonder 007 suffered in the second race at the leeward gate. Just like Santi Lopez-Vazquez, tactician aboard Quebramar-Chrysler, predicted earlier in the morning, the testing conditions in Cascais would favor the teams that committed the least number of errors. His team committed a number of them and was unbale to repeat the spotless performance of the previous two events.
After today's three races, Quebramar-Chrysler is still leading the overall racing circuit, Seawonder 007 consolidated their second place while, more significantly, Roma is now third, overtaking Zurich that had a mediocre day.
Santi Lopez-Vazquez: Our leadership shouldn't be taken for granted, it will be a tough event
Thursday, 30 August 2007: Right after the skipper meeting and a couple of hours before the start of the first race, Santi Lopez-Vazquez, tactician aboard current leader Quebramar-Chrysler, did not take victory in the event for granted. Although his team will start with a clear advantage, Lopez-Vazquez insisted it would be dangerous to talk about victory with 9 races scheduled in the event. He was aware of the difficult races they would have to face and the high level all teams had reached, especially after the incorporation of a number of America's Cup sailors in almost all teams. Nevertheless, the goal of Quebramar-Chrysler is to be crowned champions of the 2007 season.
The race area in Cascais is much more complicated than Valencia or Palma. There are important wind shifts, differences in pressure and the currents play an important role. It is much easier to commit errors but this factor could play in their favor, since they have proved to be one of the most consistent teams and the one to commit the least number of errors, according to Lopez-Vazquez.

These two victories consolidated a leadership they held throughout the three days of the event and even allowed them to distance themselves from second José Maria Ponce’s Canarias-Puerto Calero that scored a 3rd and 2nd place. Finally, Daniel Maestre’s Fermax finished third, after scoring their first ever victory, taking advantage of the collision between Zurich and Canarias-Puerto Calero, and a 3rd spot.
Highlights from the Copa del Rey - Overall circuit classification
Tuesday, 7 August 2007: The first ever Copa del Rey for the GP42 class was crowned with enormous success. Racing was exciting and according to all owners and sailors these boats are fun and competitive and without any doubt they have a bright future. Quebramar-Chrysler crowned winner of the Copa del Rey
Saturday, 4 August 2007: Quebramar-Chrysler was the indisputable winner in the GP 42 class. It is its first Copa del Rey after seven years sponsoring a sailing team. Its crew, from Desafío Español and with Spanish sailor Laureano Wizner as helmsman won again today’s two races with a total of eight victories in eleven races. A dominance already shown at the Trofeo SM La Reina de Valencia and that took him to the top of the podium of the 26 Copa del Rey Camper Audi with 20 points advantage over second classified Canarias Puerto Calero, with Jose María Ponce at the helm. Jan Santana and Jordi Calafat’s Zurich were finally third overall although tied with the Canary islands team. They were OCS in the first race and had to take a penalty and this made them lose the silver medal. Italian boat Seawonder was left at one step of the podium.
Quebramar-Chrysler further distance themselves while Italians climb back
Friday, 3 August 2007: The fourth day of the Copa del Rey Audi Camper was marked by the very strong northeastern breeze and the resurgence of the two Italian teams that fought hard to dominate Quebramar-Chrysler.
Starting early in the morning, the bay of Palma was besieged by a strong northeastern wind that didn’t follow the usual pattern for this time of the year. The breeze, ranging from 15 to 20 knots and with peaks around 22 knots, gave the GP42 boats the opportunity to offer an exhibition of spectacular racing.

Quebramar-Chrysler extends lead after two more victories and a second place
Friday, 13 July 2007: Three races took place in the second day of the Trofeo de la Reina in Valencia and it seemed that nobody and nothing could stop Quebramar-Chrysler from dominating, not even a penalty for crossing the starting line too early in the day's last race.
For the second consecutive day the GP42 class stole the show in the event and offered close and exciting racing under a sea breeze that steadily built up.
Quebramar-Chrysler scores double victory on opening day of Trofeo de la Reina
Thursday, 12 July 2007: The opening day of the Trofeo de la Reina and maiden race of the GP42 fleet couldn't have been better. Valencia's sea breeze was blowing between 11 and 15 knots from the southeast (110-120 degrees) and racing was very close. Being the very first regatta for most of the teams, Thursday and in particular the first race, were used as a means of finetuning for both crews and yachts.
Quebramar-Chrysler scored a double victory after being the most consistent team that made the least number of errors. The yacht is crewed entirely by members of the Spanish America's Cup challenger Desafío Español, a fact the certainly contributed to their performance. Still, the first 5 positions were constantly alternating and the preliminary conclusions from the first day were particularly positive.
Everything is ready for the first regatta of the fleet in Valencia
Thursday, 12 July 2007: The crews were working relentlessly this morning, preparing the boats for the first race of the Trofeo de Reina.
According to Pepe Ribes, bowman on Zurich, the races will be spectacular, especially downwind, where the GP42's are exceptionally fast. In yesterday's trainings, the yachts powered ahead at 17 knots.
Not only are the boats faster, their small size makes crew work much more demanding but at the same time exciting and fun. The fleet might be small this year, yet Ribes sees a very promising future and wouldn't exclude 40 boats by the end of the decade.

GP42 Grand Soleil by King Marine - first BA boats prepare to take Europe by storm
Expectation is growing in Europe’s GP42 fleet as Jan Santana’s Team Zurich makes her first competitive outing, Pedro Campo’s Movistar nears race-readiness in Spain and Peer Moberg anticipates the arrival of Al Capone in Hamburg.
We look forward to seeing them sailing soon.

Going Mafia style
Norwegian grand old man Einar Sisseners new GP 42 will enter the waters guns blazing this season. On their brand new Botin & Carkeek designed carbon machine they have taken their traditional name Al*Cap*One to a whole new level. They gave the design company Mediafront a chance to play, and they went for the obvious mafia connection. The black boat has “bullet holes” in the hull, drawings of bodies on deck and a bullet going through the new Al Capone logo.
If that doesn’t scare the competition away, Sissener will most definitely have the speed to outrun them.

Maiden race for GP42 Zurich leaves excellent impressions
The first ever Spanish GP42 boat, Jan Santana's GP42 Zurich, had her maiden racing experience this weekend in Barcelona. The brand new boat took part in the Trofeo Zegna from Friday until Sunday and was helmed by the Spanish up and coming young match racer Manu Weiler.
Being the only Spanish GP42 to be sailing (all other units are still under construction) it was obvious the GP42 class did not race on its own. As a result, it is impossible to make any comparison and the assessment of its performance is only indicative. The class in which GP42 Zurich raced included various Grand Soleil 40, 43 and 45.

The first two GP42 Botin & Carkeek - Grand Soleil are in Valencia
The first two boats of the 2007 generation of GP42 arrived at the Real Club Nautico yesterday.
The crews are working to put them together to go sailing as soon as possible.
These two yachts have been built in Argentina by King Marine for Grand Soleil/Cantiere del Pardo.
One is owned by Pedro Campos and sponsored, as usual, by Telefonica Movistar and the other by Jan Santana and sponsored by Zurich are going to be present in all the International GPO42 Circuit 2007 and also in the Spanish regattas.

The first two GP42's by King Marine are on their way to Valencia
The scheduled calendar of the five King Marine GP 42's is advancing as planned, with the first two units having already been delivered. This joint venture between Grand Soleil and Botin & Carkeek and built by King Marine, in their facilities in Buenos Aires, the first two units are aboard cargo ships on their way to Valencia's harbor from where they will be transfered to King Marine facilities in Alginet. The boat builders will then fit out the boats before their launch.
The first of the five units belongs to Pedro Campos. She left Buenos Aires on the 15th of March and is expected to arrive in Valencia during the first week of April. The second of the five new GP42s belongs to Jan Santana, was shipped yesterday and is expected to arrive in Valencia during the third week of April.

Italian ORC GP 42 sailor gets company
Italian Filippo Faruffini was the first GP 42 skipper and owner out of the yard and last season he raced the boat in solitude in IMS races in the Mediterranean. But this season he is not alone anymore. 13 boats are on its way and the success of the class is just around the corner.
Most owners go from small boats to big boats. Italian Filippo Faruffini went the other way. After racing his Roma, a Farr/Latini Marine 85 among the other big boats, he decided to go for the ORC GP 42.

The GP42 class at crossroads, 2007 looks very promising
While the spotlights of attention of the international sailing community are all focused on Valencia and the America's Cup, another major sailing class is steadily advancing and growing both in number of yachts and, equally important, top professional sailors involved. Right now there are 14 boats that have been built or are under construction from six different nationalities (6 ESP, 3 ITA, 2 CRO, 1 POR, 1 NED and 1 NOR). The first ever GP42 was a Farr design built by Latini Marine in Italy and made her debut in the Trofeo de la Reina in Valencia, last year. The second boat was built by Croatian boatyard Murtic Yachts and designed by Botín & Carkeek.

The GP42 class keeps growing
After a break-through year in 2006, the popularity of the exciting new GP 42 Class looks set to spread even further. A recent interview in Scuttlebutt confirms that the GP 42 class will be a real hot competition that will attract additional owners, designers and sponsors.
The Class already has strong footholds in Spain and Italy, and now orders reflect growing interest in Holland, Norway, Portugal and Croatia.
